Nothing better than a Humpday cocktail, can I get an “amen?”
I was invited to the neighbor’s the other night for dinner and decided to bring over a sangria, because it’s easy to make, easier to share with a group, and always a crowd pleaser. I had an abundance of watermelon puree in the house leftover from some weekend endeavors and thought, “hey, I bet this would make a good sangria,” since sangria is mainly a mixture of wine, a fruit juice, a liquor of some kind, and fruit. And this is how Watermelon Sangria was born.
Ingredients: 1 (750 mL) bottle of white wine (I used pinot grigo), 1 cup watermelon puree (strained)*, 1/4 cup of Grand Marnier, 1/4 cup of whiskey, limes and watermelon (cubed), simple syrup** to taste.
*To make the watermelon “juice” I pureed the watermelon in my blender then strained it to leave just the juice. Straining it removes all the “bits” making the sangria smoother and much more enjoyable to drink.
**Simple syrup is just a mixture of equal parts water and sugar, mixed until the sugar is dissolved. Since watermelon juice isn’t naturally that sweet, I suggest adding some to this sangria recipe.
1. In a large picture combine the wine, strained watermelon puree, Grand Marnier and Whiskey. Add simple syrup to taste (I used about 2-3 tablespoons) and mix.
2. Add in cubed limes and watermelon. Allow this mixture to sit for at least 4 hours.
3. Serve over ice and garnish with fruit
Enjoy!
